About Us

Philinter Center for English Language was established in 2003 and prides itself on offering a safe, friendly environment for its students. We are located in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu, Philippines and are only 5 minutes drive from Mactan International Airport.

We provide a multi-cultural environment for about 150 students from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, China and Russia and with our focus on 1 to 1 classes is a perfect place for you to learn and practice your English.

Free time also offers you the chance to experience life in the Philippines. You can simply visit the many shopping malls in the area or go to the beach to swim, snorkel or, perhaps, learn to dive or go island hopping. In some cases, you might even want to learn to fly at one of the local flight schools. Also, enjoy the many fiestas that take place here and a stay in the Philippines would certainly not be complete without trying some of the local delicacies and the world famous fruit, the mango.

We have recently become the Philippine agent for INTESOL Worldwide Ltd.

        INTESOL

150 hour Certificate in TESOL

A TESOL course is an investment of your time and money so you probably want to make sure that your investment is a good one.  This is why choosing the right course for you is so important.  The old saying of ¡°Buy cheap, but twice¡± most definitely applies here. Traditionally, the only way you could gain this real life experience was by attending a 4 week course, typically accredited by either Cambridge/RSA or Trinity College.  These courses are a great introduction to the TEFL world, but not always convenient or accessible.

You may not be able to take 4 weeks off from work or family commitments, or you may simply prefer to work at your own pace, in your own timeSo, what are your options?

You could take a short online or weekend TEFL course.  However, there are two reasons we would advise against this.  Firstly, although the short time it takes to complete this type of course (usually around 20 hours) may seem appealing, the fact is that you cannot possibly cover what you need to know with a short online or weekend TEFL course.  Secondly, reputable employers around the world require teachers to have passed a TESOL course that was at least 100 hours in length

Even employers in countries where you previously did not require certification are asking for 100 hour + certificates in exchange for better working conditions.  South Korea is a good example of this. If you do choose to take a short TEFL course you will have less choice in TEFL job opportunities and have less power when negotiating good working conditions. To be frank, any school that hires you following a short TEFL course would probably have hired you with no certificate at all.  You may have picked up some good tips during the weekend or online TEFL course, but the qualification you receive has no real value.

  1. Employers proactively seek to employ INTESOL graduates every month.

  1. You can study from anywhere in the world.

You Could Have The TEFL Certificate That Schools Actively Seek

Every month Language School Directors from all over the world purchase our online TEFL certificate courses for their staff. A fact that makes us proud. We're proud because it means that when you're an INTESOL graduate, you have a prestigious qualification that schools don't just recognise, they actually seek it out.

METHOD

We use a carefully structured approach to learning, and we help you all the way. If you feel you are in difficulties with any aspect of the course, please get in touch with your trainer. We cannot help if we do not know what the problem is. Each unit/module of the course is illustrated by practical methods and strategies for use in the ESOL classroom. There is a balance between theory and practice, our aim is to show you how to become a confident, well-resourced, professional teacher, whatever your background.

ASSESSMENT

Each unit/module is marked by your trainer, who will offer practical advice and guidance along the way. If we feel you are not fulfilling your potential, for whatever reason, we will contact you and suggest ways of improving your tasks, thus allowing you to gain better grades.

GRADES

Along with the advice given after each module will be a unit/module grade. The grades are awarded as follows: A1 - outstanding work; A2 - excellent; B1 - very good; B2 - good; C - satisfactory; U - ungraded (re-submit) If your work is between 2 grades the mark may appear as C/B2 or A2/A1.

CERTIFICATE

The award of the certificate for these courses is strictly for those who successfully complete all units/modules. We will then act as referees for future TESOL positions.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course consists of self-check exercises and trainer-assessed tasks. You have a better chance of achieving good grades if you read each module thoroughly and complete the self assessments before you begin the tasks.   Tasks which ask for your opinion require an answer in ESSAY form. In your answers the assessors are looking for particular points. You are NOT required to write 20 sides!  2 - 3 sides when word processed are usually sufficient. Though we expect that you may get your ideas for materials and lessons from commercially produced resources, it is expected that ALL work will be original.

The self-check exercises are provided to give you practice and to ensure you have understood the modules before you complete the tasks to be assessed. It is our experience that good marks are not achieved by students who do not work through the course in this way.

HOW THE COURSE WORKS

When you have completed the grammar tasks contained in Unit 2, Module 1, email them to your trainer (clearly labelled as described above). The module will then be marked and assessed, your assessment grade and any necessary comments/guidance will be emailed to you. Your continuous assessment marks will be logged here, to go towards your final mark. When you have completed all units/modules and received your grades, please complete and return the ¡®Completed Modules¡¯ form which you will have downloaded with the course so that we know to prepare your final grade and certificate.

Please submit one module at a time so that we can monitor your progress and give guidance. DO NOT submit more than one module without first checking with your trainer or unless you are contacted and told you may do so.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Only the exercises which are marked TASK are to be submitted for assessment. Other exercises are for YOU to check your own understanding, and must not be submitted for marking.

To Start

E MAIL SUBMISSION - a document for trainees

Before you email any assignments to your tutor, please read this document.

Email used inefficiently can be a nightmare for both trainees and tutors.

How to make your tutor¡¯s and your own life easier¡¦¡¦

Initial contacts and setting up

  1. Introduce yourself when you first write to your tutor, saying who you are and where you are based. This is especially important if you are using an email with another name, or you may get your first assessment sheet in the name of your girlfriend or boss. If you change your email, notify your tutor immediately!

  1. If you often forward circular emails to your whole address book, then keep your tutor¡¯s and INTESOL¡¯s office email separate, to minimise the amount of unsolicited mail we receive.

  1. Make a file for your assignments on your computer. Keep all assignments together until you have finished the course. If you are using hotmail or some other provider that you are accessing outside the home, then use a disc or memory stick to store your work.

  1. Set up home email if possible as this is more reliable and the file size that can be sent and received is larger. Assignments rarely go missing but those that do have often been sent to a hotmail account and been rejected.

  1. Get yourself good virus protection software. Norton or equivalent.

Sending assignments

1.  Try to use a rational system for naming files. This will ensure that they are stored logically on your own computer and on your tutor¡¯s. The system does not really matter, but a suggestion would be:

First time you send the task:

2:2 Jane Smith

If you have to do some more work:

2:2 v2 Jane Smith

If you have to send more than one file for an assignment:

3:3 Task 1 Jane Smith                       3:3 article for task 1 Jane Smith

3:3  Task 2 Jane Smith

Put the NUMBER of the assignment, first or second version and your NAME.

2. Send your assignment as an attached WORD document.  Send only the answers, not the whole document.

3. If you resubmit an assignment, send everything back, as you would by post. Do not delete comments made by your tutor, perhaps in a different colour, in between the text. You can respond to these if you wish. Leave the assessment sheet intact at the end.

4. Please show any changes you have made to work graded ¡®U¡¯ by using a different colour or by bold or italics. This makes it clear for the tutor what is new work.

5. If you do decide to send pictures or clip art, scanned text etc, then PLEASE CHECK FILE SIZE BEFORE SENDING. Emails should be kept under 750KB at all times. Large files jam other incoming mail. This is very important.  If you have a problem, contact your tutor before sending.

5. If you have not heard from your tutor in 7 days, email again to check that the file has been received. Files do occasionally go missing.

                   Most common problems encountered

1.      Not attaching the file! Your tutor will advise you of this.

2.      Unit 2 Module 2. This file asks you to write phonemic symbols.  These often corrupt in transmission so instead use cross referencing to numbers on the chart and underlining

              to get round the problems.

3.      Overformatting. You do not need to use complicated formatting on your work, especially if you are not an experienced software user. In extreme cases too much formatting results in the tutor being unable to write comments on your work, or file corruption in transmission.  Neat, clear presentation is all that is required.

4.      Over-large file size. This can be a serious problem and most often occurs in Unit 3 Module 4. There are many ways to reduce file size. Images can be reduced and pictures sent through the ¡®send to¡¯ facility. Send separate emails, send an example instead of a whole set of flashcards. Keep the images low resolution.

Your tutor will store all your assessed work and assessment sheets until the end of the course for moderation purposes, but make sure you also store your work.
